?Crime has always played a prominent role in our society, and the way it’s classified and punished has been a problem in American culture. Crime itself is imminent, but the way that our government and the people in power handle it has become a social problem. Studies show that the people in power influence the way our prison systems are handled. These conflicting areas of power have caused individuals to act differently, and have also profiled certain people to be accused of crime at a higher rate than others. The movie viewed in class, The Injustice System In America, can best be explained through the conflict theory. The film discussed the most critical problems with the American injustice system in today’s society. It described how large corporations and politicians lobby for prison systems in order to gain profit and more importantly, power. In addition, the film strongly criticized the allocation of spending for the injustice system. The main point they preached was that we are spending way too much money on our prison system, and that we should put the money where it’s going to change lives. Rather than spending billions on correctional facilities, we should spend it on education---which receives a smaller amount of funding. Aside from spending, they also scrutinized the way our society criminalizes certain individuals from different races and economic regions. Conflict theorists explain actions and social order are maintained by domination, and that those with the greatest political, economic, and social resources have the power. As mentioned earlier, large corporations and politicians with money and power lobby the prison systems to get want, or get reelected, and leave those without power to suffice to what the people in control want. The inequality traces back to the early ages of our society in terms of racial tension. Unfortunately, racial profiling and discrimination is still a significant issue in American culture.
