Before reading “Forty Studies that Changed Psychology,” by Roger R. Hock, I didn’t know very much about psychology. Most students believe that psychology is the study of the brain. My definition of the word psychology is how we see the brain and how each individual thinks the brain works and all the cool things it can do. While I was reading this book I learned a lot about psychology, the different parts of the brain, depth perception and how babies adapt to it, how people looking on to a situation react and human behavior. Once I really got into the book I realized there was a lot more to psychology then just the simple study of the brain. After reading “Forty Studies That Changed Psychology”, my previous definition of psychology completely changed. I understand now that it is a much more complex and hard to understand then I could have imagined. My definition now is that while the study of the brain is correct it is very broad, there is much more to this study then just how the brain works, I now know it is very complicated. I learned through this book that the study of the way people make observations, mental development, behaviors, and ways to manipulate the mind in both positive and negative ways are all ways to interpret what psychology really is. The ways psychologists study the brain and all of its abilities and functions, the individual brain does not matter as much as how people and animals actually react to specific situations. Psychologists study which parts of the brain affect different the different ways you think and act. The study that had to do with the brain in a non testing or study, “One Brain or Two?” This study dealt with people who had a condition which caused you to not have a corpus callosum, because of this they used physical activity instead of using the psychological part of the brain. The amount of professional ability of the mental health hospitals in the study titled, “Who’s Crazy Here, Anyway?” was interesting.
