In Lars Kepler "The Hypnotist," character Josef Ek the antagonist, is a round character. Josef is a serial killer who brutally killed four of his family members. When Josef's history is revealed, it is obvious that learnt it can be seen that, he has mental problems because of what he endured during his childhood. Also, Josef is a round character, because he shows several sides to his personality, and he is very complex like a real person would be, with difficult problems of his own and a bad history. Josef is dynamic and undergoes a few important inner changes during the course of the story, these changes result in a complete character change at the end of the book. Josef is a round character because; the readers get to see a completely mentally instable murderer, who doesn't understand himself. He thinks of himself as the “human god”, then over time after he realizes everything and gets mental help eh changes in to being a devoted Christian who’s full of sympathy and empathy. An example of Josef comparing himself to god, “This stupid crazy humanity never accepted me for who I am; now I know why. It’s because I am the closest thing to a god, and the people fear me and thinks that my mighty powers can destroy them!” said Josef, (Keplar, 218). This quote shows that, Josef thinks of himself as someone as worthy and powerful as god, and he thinks that he can do what he wishes, to whomever he wishes. The dramatic change in Josef’s life and personality is what truly makes him a round character because unlike a flat character Josef changes, for example, “Today at church I saw a young widow, and she was crying, her husband died last week in a car crash, I felt so bad. I have never felt this way before in my whole life, and I went to her and gave her a hug, to give her a little bit of comfort, said Josef to Emily" (405).
