Defining the Moral Dilemma

Moral dilemma is when one has to choose to do something that conflicts their values, or when one must sacrifice one belief for another. This is exactly what happens to these characters that are put into difficult situations. Commander Oram from Gentlemen, Your Verdict, by Michael Bruce, is a very strong, brave, and decisive leader of his crew. In contrast to Oram, there is John Adam, From The Firing Squad, by Colin McDougall. Adam is very different when compared to Oram. He is quite indecisive and must make decisions in order to clear his name. Both Oram and Adam make life and death decisions to which the consequences are unknown and possibly fatal. Adam and Oram are both placed in difficult positions, to which they respond with different ways, Oram with decisiveness and Adam with indecisiveness. However, both make a decision that is in line with their morals. Decisiveness is a quality that is almost an unwritten requirement for being a great leader. For example, "Now there is one very hard job to be done, but it is one that can be done by men with families ¦ that's all.  Commander Oram decided without second thought that he must save the members of his crew that have families over the ones that don't. He made this critical decision to kill off 15 members of his crew without any hesitation. Another example of Oram's decisiveness is "I have arranged that Lt. Paul will survive, by the death of the others." Oram was confident that what he did was the right decision, and in that process Oram saved the lives of 5 men. However, Oram did regret what he had to do to his men. For instance, "I am going to go join my crew...Oram didn't show any emotion, but silently cared for his men. He even went through with his critical decision knowing that he would be killing himself. He stayed strong and even admitted that he what he did in his report to the shore station.
