Many aspects of culture have been dispersed and fused into that of the apes. These characteristics are said to be exclusively innate to humans, but this is not true. Symbols and language are forms of communication that carry shared meanings among apes. Overall, apes have developed a sense of culture that is said to be exclusively to humans. These very complex forms of communication have furthered the integral relationship among apes and their respective communities. Communication creates culture because it is one of the primary means through which information is being transmitted and it also embodies many of the cultural values individuals can have. Apes have culture although they have distinct cultures among their respective communities. In the article Components of Culture, the author explains how culture is important for two reasons. One is because it defines the set symbols and cognitive knowledge that integrates the society. Secondly, it provides a form of integration within the community and this often defines the roles that each member develops within it (Monnier 1). It can be said that when there is common language or symbols it is a sign of shared history, shared customs or beliefs because it is what builds conformity in a society. Communication influences cognition and in doing so helps to transform culture that integrates the different societies that exist. Symbols and language can differ if communicating with someone who is from a total different community or who is raised and taught to think differently. One of the elements on how culture is transmitted by apes is through language. Apes vocalize to communicate with each other and it is extremely needed to be able and adapt into their environment. Apes can have differences in their culture based in the community they live in. In the article Gestural communication of the gorilla the author explains how apes communicate to satisfy their biological and social needs such as avoiding predators and interacting with other group members. It can be said that language to them is symbolic and shapes their cultural environment for a better living within their community. They use a range of different signals many of which have directly evolved as ritualized abbreviations of more basic behavioral or physiological processes (Genty 20). It can be said that apes are socially integrated in their community because they most certainly work together to ensure their survival. Apes have elements of shared culture necessary to feel integrated within their population. Symbols and language is a way of communication for apes that is employed for intentional communication within specific individuals in their community (Genty 1). It can be said that language is a way in which communities can communicate in unique manner so that their own culture can be created. In the book Nonhuman Primate Communication the author mentions how culture is a cultural transmission of a communication system through learning is a fundamental attribute of language (Hill, Ch. 4, 67). The role of cultural transmission in apes is to create and spread their traditions that shapes and patterns their
