India, Cricket and Other Favorite Sports

This deity has taken the form of God in India and is worshipped virtuously by all Indians unanimously. It is the only religion that unites all Indians. It runs through the veins of all us citizens as is often referred to as the ˜God of Sports'. But this maddening popularity and worship of cricket has sounded the Devil's knell for all other sports played. It has ended the reign of traditional Indian sports such as kushti, kabaddi, chess and hockey and has classified them as ˜old-fashioned' and ˜clichés'. It has even prevented the foreign ambassadors such as tennis, hockey and football from winning over the hearts of Indians, despite their global popularity. It has miraculously managed to keep the ˜West-crazy' Indian society at bay. It is not that cricket is the only sport that India is competitive at; India has the world's best chess and archery teams; our nation has received the highest and most eminent honours in the field of hockey, which is the reason why the game has been given the title of the National Sport of our country. The Indian Squad even has a band of rising stars in numerous events such as boxing, shooting, wrestling, tennis, badminton, billiards and many more. Yet, why are they all oppressed by the tyrannical, formidable dictator known as Cricket? Don't athletes like Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Deepika Kumari, Leander Paes and Vishwanathan Anand work with as much dedication and consecration to make the nation proud as the oh-so-famous cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Virendra Sehwag? And if so, then why don't they receive as much support and appellation as our beloved cricketers? Why do we see the Hockey World Cup Stadiums lacking supporters for India while the India-Pakistan Cricket Rivalry Matches completely packed with supporters and spectators?
