Nine hundred and fifty two games: that’s the number of games my high school volleyball team has won in a row. Eight years’ worth of going undefeated in section play. We had also won three Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Runner-Up titles and two WPIAL Championship titles. It was senior year and we were about to continue that tradition and win another WPIAL Championship. It was Friday, the day before the big game and we were at practice. To start it off we had our usual talk about what our goals were for the game and a quote from Coach Mills. The quote read, “Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” He gave us a quote every day since section play was over. On the back of the paper he would put who we were playing on one side of the bracket and Freeport on the other. The quotes would always get us so pumped to have a good practice, but for some reason today was not one of those days. We weren’t practicing up to our full potential and it worried the other seniors and me. All we could do was sleep on it and see how we played tomorrow. Trying to fall asleep that night was one of the hardest things. I found myself laying there just dreaming about winning and it being the best day of my life. But also, I caught myself doubting our abilities and losing. I had so many emotions running through my mind and I didn’t know what to do. “Beep, beep, beep,” the dreadful noise of my alarm clock actually sounded like heaven that morning. I was so excited to wake up and start the day. I had been looking forward to this all season. I had awaken with so much confidence that this was the day we were going to win the title. The bus ride there was at first very quiet, we were all so focused on what our goal was and what we had to do to achieve it.
