As I sit and read this bedtime story to my little sister, I ponder on the fact of how did I start to read or even write? Growing up, my father and mother were not in my life. I lived with my grandmother. Without my parents, I used to be very depressed and I used to just fill my notebooks with poetry. Poetry suddenly took over my life. My grandmother read a copious amount of bedtime stories to me every night. She truly inspired me because; she was a very wise woman. I will never forget the day she read me a Dr. Seuss book. The name of the book was Green Eggs and Ham. I was so obsessed with that book because I made a poem describing the book. Most importantly, there was a quote located in the back in the book which was “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go” by Dr. Seuss. That particular quote motivated me to want to improve my reading and writing because; knowing how to read and write is the golden ticket to the globe. That means that knowing how to read and write is the key to success even at a young age. My incredible journey started when I was five years old. It was my first day in kindergarten. My grandmother described to me how it would be but it was more than I imagined because, it was suddenly reality. As I sat in my chair with the purple writing book my grandmother bought me, I was in awe of how the classroom was filled with books. My teacher began to write numbers and letters on the colorfully board. I picked up my pencil and began to copy what she was displaying on the board. After my first day of kindergarten, my grandmother couldn't stop me from writing ideas. I was puzzled of the thought that I could write shapes, numbers, and letters on a sheet of paper. I remember when I used to just write and I didn't know what I was displaying. Everyday my grandmother and I would review with different type of flashcards. That gradually improved my reading and writing skills to express my poetry. At the age of eight, my reading and writing enhanced more when I enrolled in a poetry slam. A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. After I signed up, I was informed that we had to have the word slavery in our poem. So, basically
