Think of the last time you read a book or watched a show. Did it end the way you expected it to? Or did the creator throw a curve ball at you? Most media doesn’t end the way we expect them to, and even though the creator might foreshadow that, we might not pick up on it on the first read. Surprise endings, especially with situational irony, is what keeps us interested in books, stories and all different kinds of media. If all books and shows ended the way we thought they would, we would just become uninterested in them because we could be able to predict how they’re going to end. Surprise endings with situational irony make stories and other media more memorable, entertaining to read, and the creator could be using it as a way to prove a point. If media had no surprise endings then they would become very predictable. Media with surprise endings and situational irony are more memorable. Situational irony is something that doesn’t end the way you expect it to or the opposite of what you thought. It would be like a fire station burning down. All types of media can contain surprise endings. If you watched a show on Netflix or read a book and it ended in a way you didn’t expect, you would remember it for a while because you would wonder why the producer chose to end it that way. Surprise endings make media more entertaining for everyone involved with it. For the creators of books and shows it challenges their creative abilities to come up with a twist ending that the audience wouldn’t expect. It also can challenge the audience to think to predict what might happen or it can keep them on the edge of their seats in suspense. It makes the audience want more, and it’s what keeps the literary and entertainment industries alive. The creators of the media could also be using the surprise ending or situational irony to prove a point.
