Progress is a forward movement toward a destination. With progress comes power and supremacy. For this reason, powerful nations have tried constantly for centuries to achieve progress through the suffering of others. This happened in North America when Euro-Americans decided to immigrate and build their colonies without regard to the native Indians who already occupied the land. The Euro-Americans took advantage of the native Indians’ kindness in order to achieve their objective of establishing new colonies in America. This process also happened in Europe when the Third Reich, under the command of Adolf Hitler, used forced labor as a tool to persecute Jews and other victims throughout Nazi-dominated Europe. There are similarities between the Jewish Holocaust and the Native American Genocide. For example, Hitler often praised the efficiency with which Euro-Americans were able to exterminate the Native Americans. The fact is that Columbus and his men were no better than Hitler, if not worse. “Forced and slave labor covers ordeals that varied greatly over time and from place to place according to the category of person involved and consequence of the sort of assignment meted out” (Hayes 1). These are real representations of facts that have occurred in the past which have made a great impact on the world we live in today. The Euro-Americans had everything planned when they were establishing their colonies in America. Initially, they became friends with the native Indians. This was extremely important because the Indians knew the land and where all of the resources were located, especially gold which was the most sought after resource by the white men. Gold was very valuable; it could be traded for money and other necessities as well. After gaining the confidence of the Native Indians, the Euro-Americans turned against them, killing and destroying large numbers of tribes, in order to acquire more land and natural resources, so their
