In the 21 century, human beings face serious situations in health and literacy. Many people, particularly in Haiti and Afghanistan, are dying from some serious diseases like tuberculosis and malaria, and also the literacy rate is low. To alleviate these situations, Paul Farmer and Greg Mortenson, two Americans, are doing their best in Haiti and Afghanistan. Haiti is one of the poorest counties in the world and many people are dying of curable diseases. Since they do not have money to cure their diseases, Farmer believes he should help them. So, Dr. Paul Farmer went to Haiti. Afghanistan is also one of the poorest countries in the world so another American, Mortensen, went to Afghanistan to build schools and provide an education to children. This essay will deal with narrative, what they provide for people, the difficulties they face, and how they make money to support it. Mortenson and Farmer are the subjects of bestselling books. Mortenson’s book, Three Cups of Tea is an autobiography. Mortenson’s book has sold more than 2.5 million copies and been published in 34 countries. On the other hands, Farmer’s book Mountains Beyond Mountains was written by Tracy Kidder and it is a biography. It has sold more than 100,000 in hardcover and 613,000 in paperback on 2008. Three Cups of Tea is about Mortenson’s story in Afghanistan. He is the co-founder of a nonprofit Central Asia Institute. In July 1992, his sister, Christa, died from epilepsy. To honor his sister, in 1993, he almost climbed K2, the second highest mountain in the world. While climbing, he met a group of children who lived in the village, Korphe. It is the turning point of his life. Children were sitting in the dirt with sticks to solve the math problem, and Mortenson decided to help them by building a school. After then, he returned to the US, raised money, went back Afghanistan to fulfill his promise and built a school especially for girls. But, after he went back Afghanistan, he got some problems. There was no bridge to transfer the supplies for school in Korphe.
