When we mention the word "privacy" we mean that there is something very personal about ourselves that we would not like to share it with others. But why are we so reluctant to let others know about us? In the research essay, issues about why privacy is a critical and vital topic will arise, as well as the government's position in this matter. It is so easy for the government to strip its citizens from their privacy in the name of "national security." However, people should not be this quick to give up their privacy. The reason I chose this topic is because I want people to be aware and educated about the importance of this issue. Furthermore, they should be able to defend their privacy regardless of whoever is trying to take the right away from them. We as a society are struggling with the issue of government's invasion of privacy. Much of the world's communication flows through the U.S, whether you are living there or living in another continent. During George Bush's time of presidency, he had ordered the NSA (National Security Agency) to monitor people's calls, and intercept their emails without their consent. He has not denied this issue and said that software and databases make it easy to monitor people's activities (Gold, 2006). Everyone is at risk for getting caught by NSA including average citizens not suspected of any crime. One of the basic rights is the right to privacy. Tools for surveillance have never been more powerful and the threat of our personal freedom have never been greater. But why is privacy so important to us? There is no easy way to answer this because many people have their own reasons for this. According to Wiley (1975) privacy is important if we are to maintain the various social relationships that we have with other people and having someone else invade it is known as breaching of one's privacy.
