Media influences young women to their appearance and affects nearly half their health. The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders proves that 69% of girls in 5th – 12th grades are influenced by the idea of a perfect body shape when they look through magazine images [Self-Image/MI] copious percentage. Not only magazines influence teens today; TV shows, Movies, including fashion models cause self-image issues. Have you ever realized how motivated media can make you want to run to the gym when you see flawless, gorgeous, tan, abs, perfect figured girl next to an ad? It’s a desire for same image but we don’t realize it can cause a mental depression and physical depression at the same time. Present, to some young adults have chosen the easy way to weight loss. Amanda von Schlegel points out the effectiveness this is; many starve themselves and develop an eating disorder through time. Till this day we have witness models on an advertising commercial promoting unhealthy fastening food; something quite ironic. But it also brings women to their attention that a cheesy, steamy steak, bacon strip burger along with a side basket of fries would be pleasing to devour. Many young women don’t realize the truth behind these images; Needless to say this can be more effective on them. “The ideal female has become thinner while the average American woman has become heavier” (Domil, 2). Women blame media and the percentages of eating disorders keep increasing. Young women tend to overreact towards their size on certain times. Well let’s just say that is something normal for most women. Although, that isn’t always the case but if a woman isn’t satisfied with herself she will probably be bragging about how fat she is, or complain about every little flaw she has.
