Power is a entity that everyone struggles and strives for, at some point in their lives. Some want to hold power over others, and some want to have the ability to have power over their own actions. In Purple Hibiscus, Eugene demonstrated an inclination to have power over all of his surroundings. From his family, to his community and church life, he used wealth, religion, and violence to instill a sense of power over others. The example he set for wanting this amount of power could have also been a contributing factor in why he eventually lost power over his own family. The amount of wealth that Eugene had in the book, made it obvious that he was held to higher standard than most other people in his community. To the people of Enugu, Eugene was a God of sorts to them due to the amount of money that he put into the city. Knowing that he was viewed as an elite member of the community because of his ability to provide for it, he sprinkled his wealth among the townsfolk just enough for them to be blinded by or nonchalant about what was going on in his family. The people in the community could have been aware that some type of violence was going on in Eugene’s household. But, because of the way he contributed to the community they turned a blind eye to it. If a member of the community were to speak up about what they felt was going on in the house, they would be risking the benefaction that Eugene offered to them. Using the wealth that he had Eugene was able to silence his community from speaking out against the way they felt about what was going on in his home. The wealth, did not, however, keep him from having power of Jaja and Kambili. Once the two of them visited Nsukka, and lived in a simpler, more practical home, and associated their freedom with being there and living under those conditions, they were able to gain more power over themselves, meaning their father’s gradual loss of power over them.
