The short story “The Sentry” brings some strong themes such as jealousy, dominance, family relations and post-traumatic stress disorder. It tells a strange story about a boys childhood. When Bojan turned 10 his father returned home from the front with a mastiff called Kaiser. First of Bojan was very exited about having a dog because he never had one before. But after some time it turns out that the dog had some serious problems “Within its first month at their house, the dog had killed two of the neighborhood's alley cats”(p.2,l.31) At first Bojan does not know how to handle Kaiser but after some time he discovers that Kaiser react very strongly when he starts reloading and emptying the chamber of the gun. One day where Bojan was tormenting Kaiser again his father discovered him “”Is that how it's done?" his father said.”(p.5,l.131) His father pulls out a chair and says “sit” to Bojan and he immediately sits. Bojans father starts slowly reloading a gun behind him, and few seconds later a blast went off right behind his ear, and the mastiff fell to the floor and rumpled into the carpet and died. The main character of the story is Bojan. “Bojan was 11, shy, and even then he loved music, the only boy at his school eagerly learning piano.”(p.4,l.99) Bojan is not very popular and often gets bullied: “On the way home one afternoon, some boys from a few blocks over wolf-packed him in the park.” (p.4,l.101) Through out Bojans childhood he has always been different and he is aware that he is different. “He would wonder for years whether everybody knew how he would turn out, whether there was something about him that revealed itself to people who could just feel those things” (p.4,l.96) Bojans father also plays an important role. After his return from the front it is obvious that his father suffers form post-traumatic stress disorder. He seems very distant and most of the time he stays for himself. The mastiff fol
