TITLE: Is Google all you need? (Information needed to study at school and university) ABSTRACT: Google has become the main source of information for students in need of academic material. The essay examines whether Google can satisfy alone a student’s academic needs. In order to achieve the aim of this essay, a critical view on the merits of Google and academic databases also, their limitation will be discussed. It is revealed that due to the simplicity of Google students ignore academic databases and school libraries. ESSAY: Since the introduction of google students have become more dependent on it as a research tool. This essay aims to discuss the on-going dependency on google and google scholar, Also the declined use of traditional library services and academic databases. This essay critically analyses how since the introduction of google scholar, traditional library service and students’ approach to data collection has changed. Therefore this essay will evaluate and discuss the issues as follows. First, the extent to which google has affected research behaviour in students. Second, how library services and academic databases compare to google in terms of quality of data. Finally it will be argued that inadequate knowledge of advanced searching techniques causes users to revert to the simplicity of google. Over the years, with the introduction of google scholar, google has acquired a large information database. Thus begging the question, are traditional library services becoming obsolete? On the contrary, I believe google still lacks the quality of information that library services offer. According to Brophy and Bodwen (2005), google provides “volume” whereas libraries provide “quality”. However, regardless of content, google has become a major research tool over the years.
