La Malinche also known as Mallinali or Dona marina was a slave that was given away by her mother. She was born in 1502 and her name means goddesses of grass. Her mother faked her death and told the townspeople that she was one of the slaves that she was diseased. She was born in Veracruz and her father was a ruler of a small village of Paynala. Her father died and her mother remarried and had another kid. Even though she was the first person born they still let her little brother to gain the heir of this father. While she was enslaved she was taken to interpret for Cortes because of her knowledge of the Mayan and Nahuatl languages. Not only did she translate but she also negotiated and a cultural mediator. While she was translating she learned more Spanish and she took the job away from the former translator Aguilar. Her name has been known as a bad interpretation in Mexico. Even though he name does not have a good meaning some people don’t think that she was a trader. The word malinchista means a disloyal Mexican. The natives of Tlaxcala called Cortez and Dona Marina the same because their language it means both sir and lady. She was Christianized with the name Dona Marina. Later in her life she had a child with Cortes. The child’s name was Don Martin Cortes. He was one of the first known mestizos in history. Dona Marina has witnessed many killings and massacres. She was in the massacre at Cholula, the conquest of Tenochtitlan, the march with Cortés. Some people say that she was a big reason why the Spanish conquistador won and without her but others say that she was a small part because of disease and other things. Over the time, La Malinche has been tied to La Llorona. With her she helped the foreign rise because she could reason with other cultures even though they are trying to do something bad.
