Abraham Lincoln stated, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power”. Power makes even the strongest men turn to nothing. Oedipus has such a desire for power, he will do anything to get as much power as he can. Oedipus’ constant desire for power is what leads to his ultimate downfall. Oedipus was a king and now all he is is a blind and exiled reject power is what did this to him. It is true that Oedipus asserts necessary power over Tiresias by demanding the truth about Oedipus’s past. Oedipus has the right to know the secret of his past that Tiresias keeps to himself. Tiresias is not fair in his hoarding of Oedipus’s life story. Had Oedipus not exerted his power to learn the history of his life, Oedipus would not have been able to uncover the reality of his prophecy. Even though Oedipus holds the power he has no right to be rude and arrogant to Tiresias. Oedipus verbally assaults Tiresias by saying “Dear gods! Must I listen to this thing? Look it dawdles! Wants to wallow in perdition! Does not turn Panic from my home” (Sophocles 24). By insulting Tiresias, OEdipus extends the use of his power to a new level of immaturity. Oedipus excessive amount of insubordination works against him as he losses the kingdoms faith. The citizens of Thebes recognize that the argument is invalid since Tiresias, being gifted by the gods, is superior . Oedipus’s struggle for power over Tiresias is ignorant as he misjudges Tiresias knowledge, ultimately leading Oedipus to his downfall. Secondly, Oedipus asserts his power over Jocasta by telling her to be quiet and then proceeding to seek the truth of his past. Oedipus very bluntly shows that he dose not care about what Jocasta as to say when he says, “Oedipus: “We’ll leave the lady to her high descent. Jocasta : “Goodbye my poor deluded lost and dammed! There’s nothing else that I can call you now” [Joca
