One bite at a time, our future resides in what we put in our mouths. Farming practices have changed drastically over the years. One relevantly new practice, factory farming, is the housing of animals in overcrowded facilities where they live in their own feces and never go outdoors. These farms are more focused on profit than a good quality of their meat products. Factory Farming is bad for our health and it’s time to take action against this practice. The USDA has come out with some new guidelines in the past couple years such as phasing out certain antibiotics for enhanced food production in chickens, pigs, and cows , but the only true way we are going to come up with a solution is to ban antibiotics all together for good. Factory farming needs stricter guidelines and regulation to better help us and preserve the future for the next generation. We as a society are being affected by factory farming in many ways that people are not aware of. The animal neglect that goes on in these facilities is alarming. The livestock are being fed very poorly, and then injected with antibiotics because of the illnesses faced from being confined in the building on top of one another. Some farms use the antibiotics for a faster production rate. As a society we are already faced with the epidemic of antibiotic resistance. Factory farming has just contributed to the antibiotic resistance and infections in our human race. For instance, when we consume the meat from these farms, we are more vulnerable to catching more food borne illnesses such as Ecoli, Salmonella, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Some people may not be opposed to factory farming. Of course our nation is wrapped up in money, and we live in a superficial world where many are blindsided by what really matters.
