Thomas Woodrow Wilsons decision to enter the United States into World War I is a decision that is often disputed and debated between historians and those who critically analyze American history. Not only does this decision cause a spirited debate in modern times, it caused an even livelier debate during the early stages of American History. There is often a split of opinion, but the negatives of the U.S. violating self-imposed neutrality outweighed the positives of entry into an unnecessary and unjustifiable war. According to Wilson, There is a price which is too great to pay for peace, and that price can be put in one word. One cannot pay the price of self-respect, (Wilson). This was his reasoning for declaring war, and because of this, it causes the United States to relinquish their neutrality and enter World War I. Unfortunately, there was no argument that could be made to stop Wilson from going to war with Germany, and valid points and arguments made by his peers, there was no stopping Americas entry into the war and the carnage that resulted from it. One could argue that Wilsons entry of the United States into World War I was justifiable and it was an attempt at retaining Americas honor. According to a historic source , Although U.S. entry into the war had been averted for the time being, the sinking of the Lusitania set the United States on a course for intervention. The sinking turned many people who were previously neutral solidly against Germany, and it was a propaganda coup for Britain, which continued to fan public opinion in the ensuing months, (Stock). This event struck a deep resentment toward the German people in the U.S. and this could have been a contributing factor towards Wilsons entry into the war. One could argue that the pressure of such nationalism in U.S. society forced his hand into declaring war.
