1984 and Big Brother - Comparative Essay

Oppressive government tactics are being used to gain control over society. In George Orwell's 1984, the ruling party has a tyrannous leader that subjects fear on their citizens with images. On the other hand, North Korea's ruling party invokes fear on their citizens with threats of labor camps. The party in Orwell's novel sets restrictions on their citizens to control how they behave. The party in North Korea, however, sets restrictions but have no control on how their citizens behave. Although they both have some sort of similarities, North Korea surpasses George Orwell's 1984. Kim Jong-un, in a sense is the modern day big brother. Although there are implications that show how Kim Jong-un is not like the party. On the other hand both leaders contain similarities that portrays images of a tyrannous leader. Residents of Oceania always see images of "Big Brother is watching you.  (Orwell, p.3) The aim of these images is to put fear into their residents. The party does this because they want the people of Oceania to believe that they are constantly being watched attentively. Now if they are being watched attentively, how are they supposed to rebel against the party? The answer is they cannot because they are being oppressed by a tyrannous leader. Kim Jong-un is a tyrannous leader who is different from the party. Unlike big brother's way of opposing fear on its residents, "The Northern Korean government systematically denies basic freedoms in the country and uses detention in labor prison camps to ensure fear of opposing the government.  (Humans right watch, hrw.org) Kim Jong-un is not like the party because he is literally threatening the residents of North Korea with labor camps for them to obey his laws and commands. Kim Jong-un in a sense is more fearful than big brother ever was. North Korea's restrictions are harsh but somewhat more lenient than in Orwell's Oceania.
