Belle tells the story of a young bi-racial girl, who is born to a slave and a wealthy father. Sir John Lindsay is the young girl’s father who promises to take her to a good life. Although, there is one main plot in this film, there are also several sub-plots. The first being Belle’s love triangle with two men, the second, Lord Mansfield’s involvement in insurance and slaves as property, and lastly how girls are forced to marry according to their rank. Belle’s love triangle involves two men, one whom is an aristocrat and the other a lawyer who is also an anti-slavery activist. Oliver Ashford is a wealthy man who would help Belle with rank in her society; while Mr. Davinier is just a young lawyer who is being mentored by her uncle. Even though Mr. Ashford can help her in rank, Mr. Davinier is the one who opens her eyes to the realities of slavery. Even with Belle’s mother being a slave, the family still tried to keep the talk of slavery away from her. In the end Mr. Davinier conveniences Lord Mansfield that the love he has for Belle is pure. Lord Mansfield’s is Belle’s uncle, but he’s also Chief Justice. Chief Justice is the one who makes the final ruling in the Zong case. The Zong case is where a captain of a slave ship dumped slaves overboard. He believed he could collect more money from insurance companies for lost slaves, than he could at a slave market. Belle’s uncle must make the final rule on deciding whether the captain on the ship was right, or rule in favor of the slaves. By Belle being the niece to Lord Mansfield it had a huge impact on the decision he made. The last sub-plot was how the girls are forced to marry according to their rank in society. In order to have a secure, set future one must find the “perfect match”. The perfect match would be someone who is wealthy, and on the upper level of the social class.
