Soccer, or Football as it is known in countries outside the US, is one of the most popular sports in the entire world. However many players and teams have been cheated out of goals or a team has been awarded a goal that should not have been. It has been up to the judgment of the referee’s if these goals will count. This is the basis for one of the biggest controversies in the sport. Should the use of goal line technology be allowed in professional soccer? The purpose of goal line technology is to clearly determine if a ball has crossed a line in order for it to be counted as a goal. However there is much opposition including some officials from the governing body of the sport. There are many things a person needs to know including how goal line technology works, the controversies that call for such technology, and the benefits to the sport. In order to understand why goal line technology is beneficial we must look at how goal line technology works. The Hawk Eye system is a technology developed to determine the position of the ball on the field; more specifically it will be used to determine if the ball has crossed the goal line. Hawk Eye was developed in 1999 by Dr. Paul Hawkins in the United Kingdom (“Goal-line”, 2010). In the article “Goal-line technology-Getting it right” (2010) the Hawk Eye system is explained. It says that the Hawk Eye system uses high speed cameras set up around the field of play. The system uses triangulation, the high speed images and timing data to calculate the position of the ball. This system is already in use by the international tennis associations as well as the professional cricket associations around the world.
