People in Korea now spend more time in a cafe than ever before. But people hardly ever go to a cafe just for drinking coffee. They might do many other things like reading a book, chatting with friends or meeting business partners in a cafe. In other words, a cafe has been another space of our life not just a coffee shop. so, I call a cafe the third place which is other than the home as the first place and the workplace as the second. From now on, I will introduce you to a cafe as the third place through the use pattern and the inner devices of a cafe. At first, I have to explain the unfamiliar word 'the third space'. People commonly stay at home or workplace. At home, People take a rest and spend their time with their family. In other words it is private place. On the other hand, people work with colleagues and make money at workplace. it is public place. So the first place is the home and the second place is the workplace for people. people repeat a routine between the home as the first place and the workplace as the second place. If so, what is the third place? The third space is the concept on the book written by American Sociologist Oldenburg. He says " ˜The Third space,' refers to the place which is a comfortable frequented place where psychological relaxation, and social needs can be satisfied. ˜The Third space' has the characteristics of comfort, openness, interactivity, playfulness, and diversity. In modern times, most of consumption spaces play the role of ˜the Third space,' and the typical example is cafe." We can see the character of the cafe as the third place through the usage patterns. The first type is that People go to a cafe when they need a personal space. The home is private space, but we cannot help being conscious of our family. Similarly, It is almost impossible to work without interruption in the office. In these cases, cafe gives us a personal space. You can go and sit at any table we want in a cafe and
