The internet has had a far bigger impact on today's society than ever before. It has constantly been a source of education and entertainment for many different types of users around the world since the 90's. However, the most impactful piece, social media, did not get introduced into mainstream until the 21st century. This new development has resulted in giving Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram the title as some of the most visited sites on the internet. These websites allow internet surfers to easily and readily share thoughts, pictures, and messages with other users no matter how far away they are from each other, hypothetically replacing in person interaction. Although this form of media seems to be very convenient and innovative, throughout the past decade, questions have been starting to rise about if these online interactions truly replace face-to-face interactions that take place outside of the social media world. According to Merriam Webster online dictionary, social medium is the form of electronic communications through which users can create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. As a result of these various ways to share within one's community, the way in which most internet users communicate has changed. Before social media was introduced, internet surfers had to use instant messaging or email to interact with each other. But, because of these new communication systems, users can now share messages, pictures, and many other things almost instantly. Users need to weigh the overall impact their online social habits have on their real world social circles. According to the studies of procon.org, social networking sites are a top news source for 27.8% of Americans, and is a way for 50% of students to talk to their friends about school assignments. Also, when people can easily connect with other individuals who have the same interests, group participation is certainly increased. With social media, there are no longer individuals with strange hobbies or interests looking for others out in the world like them.
