I have always felt strong and confident about my writing skills. I have had few struggles when completing assignments and have derived a basic outline for a successful college essay. Upon entering this course I faced an instant realization that there are still areas for improvement within my writing. I had never before conducted a semester long research study nor related my future profession as a Physician to writing. While I pushed myself to understand the material in the course, I found myself confused and frustrated at times. Although my writing this semester proves my successes in all four of the learning outcomes, I still struggled with procrastination, new writing styles, and connecting my research to form a larger argument. In reference to learning outcome one, my Genre Analysis paper proves that I was able to identify and describe a variety of genres, purposes, conventions, and audiences in my chosen profession of Physician from a rhetorical perspective. For my Genre Analysis paper I focused on three different forms that are used by Physicians during the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Although each of the documents was a form, I was able to define each as a separate genre in relation to the content, formality, and the type of information that was recorded. I was also able to describe the documents in a simplistic and easily understood way that was not specific to the medical field. I not only described their physical format, but also their content and gave examples of what the information given in the document could be used for by a Physician. By doing this I proved my ability to categorize the documents into separate genres and describe their features and purposes. The documents I chose proved my learned knowledge about the conventions of Physicians. The three genres I defined in my Genre Analysis are genres used by a large number of primary care Physicians. It is expected that a Physician will use a patient history form for new patients and referral forms when a referral to another Physician is needed. The pain level chart is a simple form that enhances the communication between Physicians and patients and is also used in hospitals as well as office. My Genre Analysis discusses the audiences in my profession in the uses of the documents that I chose and also includes sections where I define the application of each document. For example, in my Genre Analysis I described the format and content of the patient history form. I later discussed the audiences that the document communicates information with, including patients, primary care physicians and future physicians. These sections not only covered how they are used by Physicians, but also how they are used by patients, and insurance companies. In doing this I also discussed what information is communicated with each document. Through my completion of the Research Project, I have proven my ability to produce an extended writing project that uses methods and genres to investigate a question with the substantive use of concepts from primary and secondary sources, as stated in learning outcome two. In comparison to papers and essays that I have written for previous courses, the Research Project was the most difficult assignment I have completed. The terminology associated with the course and the writing style required were skills I had never been exposed to. Through the organization of the course, the project was simplified by breaking the larger project into multiple more manageable elements that would eventually be combined. Largely, there were three main projects that I completed and built upon throughout the semester. The first project of the course was the most challenging assignment for me to complete; the Research Proposal. The organization of the paper was confusing and I had no prior exposure to it. Through the comparison of two of the course reading assignments I was able to develop a theoretical framework. I not only was able to find similarities in the author's theories, but was also able to expose the differences, and define a research gap that I was going to explore. I then applied this gap to my chosen profession of Physicians and was able to develop my research plan and the purpose of the study. While I was successful in this project, I faced many challenges from the required organization and the writing style I was developing for the course. The next element of the larger Research Project was the Data Research Project. This assignment was composed of a Data Collection Report and a Genre Analysis. In order to have data to complete this project, I conducted two interviews with Physicians and one observation of an Emergency Physician. This was the most interesting assignment of the course for me as I was able to meet with and interview Physicians in the areas of medicine that I am interested in, and shadow one of them for four hours. This experience strengthened my aspiration to become a Physician and allowed me to gather per
