Someone drops their wallet, a woman is walking up to a door, and an old lady is trying to cross the street. These are situations in which a gentleman would come to help and be the supe- rior man in the dilemma. Although these may seem like basic things that every man should come to and help with, in most societies the idea of a gentleman is a lot different, and what it takes to be superior has changed throughout the years. In The Analects of Confucius, there are many re- occurring themes on what it takes to be superior and how Confucius thinks a gentleman should act, such as seeking things that are bigger than himself, staying virtuous, finding wisdom, and not being controlled by lust. As part of being superior, Confucius said “The gentleman reaches for higher things; the small man reaches for lower things.”(Huang 146) A true gentleman has to want to reach goals that are bigger than himself and not lower his standards to decisions that could bring him lower in life. To reach these goals a man must only try and reach for opportunities in his life that only escalate himself in the eyes of everyone. To do so, he must only want to get better every day. A true gentleman would never lower himself in life, and put up with problems that come his way. For the sake of being superior, a man would keep on moving through the tough times thrown at 2 him and keep escalating himself every day and become greater than anyone could ever think to be possible. Confucius also stated “If a gentleman is not grave, he will not be awe-inspiring. If he learns he will not be benighted. He keeps whole-hearted sincerity and truthfulness as his major principals and does not befriend those beneath him. When he makes a mistake, he is not afraid to correct it.” (Huang 48) The quotes explains many aspects that a man must have to be consid- ered superior. The superior man must be serious in order to lead the people he is above so he can receive the respect he deserves, and must also grow a love for learning so he can be aware of everything around him, and in this culture, it means being able to attend rituals and properly per- form them when needed.
