In the story the Rocking horse winner by D.H. Lawrence a young boy by the name of Paul is the son of a mother who seems to be incapable of love. Paul tries his best to gain love of his mother, but seems to not be able to hit the nail on the head. As Paul tries so very hard to gain the love and trust of his mother he finds himself gambling on horses and winning money for the family he loves so much. As this essay goes on we will examine the characteristics of Paul and discuss the traits of him. Paul is a young boy who lives a house that does not stop "talking", D.H. Lawrence writes, "There must be more money! There must be more money! The children could hear it all the time though nobody said it aloud (601). Master Paul did not like the sound of the house when it cried out these terrible things, all he could do was sit and be haunted by the eerie voice that the house continued to shout at him non stop. So Paul decides to do something, every time Paul got on his rocking horse he would sometimes arrive at a place with a name in his head, the name would be of a horse in a local race. Paul would bet on the horse and win money for his mother who did not know how to not spend all that the family had. It can be seen that Paul is a boy who is devoted to his family, his father is unlucky, but Paul is not. He knows that he must make his mother happy or else the house will continue to shout at him. Winning each horse race making up to a thousand pounds at a time he would store them with the family gardener Basset. Paul becomes beyond happy with each race he wins, sometimes he knows the exact winner and sometimes he does not. Paul can also be described as wanting; Paul does not know the love of a mother so he longs for it each and everyday. A small child should not be betting on horses to gain the love from their mother, but Paul does. Even though he continues to bring in money, his mother does not seem to appreciate it. She finds a job, tr
