The Raising of Minimum Wage

21 Pages 516 Words 1557 Views

Minimum wage should not be raised from $7.25/hour, because if hourly wages went up, then the cost of living would go up right along with it. This is called inflation. Many people think that it would be great to make $11/hr, but the fact is, that the price of groceries, gas, and clothing would sky rocket. US currency would go way down in terms of value of the dollar. Raising minimum wage would not change anything, because the ratio of the amount of money earned to price of pretty much everything, would still be the same, just in higher amount. Economically, more money would come into circulation, and taxes would most likely go up, as well. Another reason that minimum wage should not go up is because teenagers start out working fast food, and other small jobs while they are going to school, making minimum wage. $7.25, working 20 hour weeks, brings them about $580 a week. That is plenty enough for teenagers to get by. If they made $11/hr then they would expect higher wages in their next job, and their next, and so on. They would never know what it was like to make just $7/hr, and be ungrateful when they were making $25/hr. Along with people not being able to appreciate how much money they earn, they would not appreciate hard work. Teens will work 20 hours a week now, and with a rise in wages they would only feel like they had to work 12 hours a week, perhaps, and make just as much as they used to. A rise in minimum wages would promote laziness in the workplace. The consequences would fall hardest on the young people who deserve the opportunity to take the first step in their careers. According to cnbc.com, more the half of minimum wage workers in the United States are under the age of 25, and most are students who are trying to pay their way through schooling. Less than 15 percent of minimum wage workers are heads of a household with children. In my opinion, if someone wants to make more than is offered at minimum wage, then they should
