Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Invisible Man are intriguing books involving the hard times certain characters face in their lives. The invisible man and African American slave girl, Linda are trying to be set free from their problems. They just want theirs voices to be heard and to be granted the things they want. The main character in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a slave that jumps from home to home. The main character in Invisible Man is living off the grid, in a hole in the ground where he is sleeping in anticipation of future direct, visible action. The authors of these books interest and diverge in different ways, along with having great meaning to the context of these books. Jacobs and Ellison, both intersect in similarity of writing in some aspects. Black, white, brown are colors only. Both of these books portray the hard reputations black people carry with them. Linda is a slave that is treated poorly and unkindly with one owner and treated in a caring manner with another owner. Alongside for Invisible man, he is given more respect for being a smart black gentleman with a scholarship to a black college. But, stripped of that scholarship by an ignorant white man that is one of the founders of the black college. This quote shows they did not think a college education would not change his life and to keep him running in place, To whom it may concern, I intoned. Keep this Nigger boy running. (1.105). These 2 characters are facing racism towards them because of their color. These books show the journeys these characters are taking to get away from the harsh environments they are partaking in. Both of these books also diverge and differentiate in some ways too. The important difference of these books is that Invisible Man, is fiction and Incidents in the life of a Slave Girl is nonfiction.
