The “Killings” by Andre Dubus is a short story that deals with violence, anger and love. The story is about Fowler’s family struggling with the loss of their son who was killed in a vicious way. The man who killed their son is wandering free around the town facing no criminal charges. The story portrays a man’s immense love for his son and his wife that he would go up to any extent to do anything for them even if it means to kill someone. The author depicts the story in such a way that a reader can actually visualize the story in their head. Dubus use the literary technique of conflict and character to illustrate the story. One technique Dubus use in the story is conflict, specifically man vs. man. In the story, the protagonist, Matt fowler the father has a conflict with the man, Richards who killed his son, Frank. Richards is on bail and roams around in the town freely. Matt says “I don’t see him. I’m in the store all the time. Ruth sees him. She sees him too much. She was at Sunnyhurst today getting cigarettes and aspirin, and there he was. She can’t even go out for cigarettes and aspirin. It’s killing her.” “Every day since he got out. I didn’t think about bail. I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about him for years. She sees him all the time. It makes her cry.” Matt thought he would not have to see Richard ever, since he would be locked up in jail, but he got out on bail and Matt’s wife Ruth sees Richards everywhere she goes, and it breaks her heart to see the man who killed her son, walk freely around the town, She can’t even go out anywhere because the thought of seeing him, makes her want to kill him. Richards shot Frank “twice in the chest and once in the face with 9mm.automatic” because the thought of seeing frank with his ex-wife and kids was too much to bear.
