Since the birth of human civilization, social equality has always been one of the most controversial topics in our society. There has been controversy concerning the precise notion about equality for what or equality among whom? For many politicians, equality has a rhetorical power rendering it suitable as a political slogan. For society, it means equal human value and equal access to those things necessary to lead a decent or good life. For the legislature, equality means recognition of human rights and obligations to seek the justice. Most governments have pursued equality through social control. But, it seems that we never ever achieve this great social ideal in such a way because it is a personal, also a social issue. The inherited diversity of every individual makes the society unequal, and the segmentation of social class complicates the connotation of the social equality. That is why Aristotle said, equals should be treated equally, and un-equals unequally. There is no absolute equality in the world, and we will never fulfill the dream that make everyone equal in our society. But, we can strive to approach equality by our courage, faith, gumption, and diligence. However, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. describes a totally equal, but extremely controlled society in his science fiction Harrison Bergeron. In that society, everybody was finally equal and nobody could be smarter, better looking and stronger than anybody else. If someones inherited intelligence was above normal, he/she would be enforced to wear a little mental handicap radio in his/her ears in order to control their brains not to be smarter than normal people. It sounds ridiculous to us, but not terrible because after all it happens in the fiction. However, many people may dont know this kind of similar situation actually took place in real life in China fifty years ago.
