Fast Food and the American Way of Life

Obesity is one of the leading health concerns in the United States. Fast food is one of the main contributors that effect American health negatively. Children are heavily targeted by the fast food industry due to the positive effects it has on industry sales. Too many kids are way too heavy too young and action needs to be taken to slow down the consumption of value meals. The motives that led Schlosser and Sifferlin to write these essays is their concern with the overall well-being of Americans, largely young children. Schlosser teaches about the introduction of fast food to American culture by providing a brief history of how it came to be while explaining the effects it has on whoever consumes it. Although he never says it, he infers how the American way of life needs the fast food industry to thrive in its economy but also the fast food industry has also been driven by changes in the economy: thus creating a sort of mutualistic relationship. Unfortunately, the concept that is keeping America afloat is slowly but surely sinking it. Schlosser explains “Most of all, I am concerned about its impact on the nation’s children” because he isn’t very much opposed to what is in the food like he is about the children that are eating it (Fast Food). The initial process before the meat is developed into the final product is where Schlosser would like the main concern to be because “these workers have facilitated the introduction of deadly pathogens, such as E. coli 0157:H7, into America’s hamburger meat” (Fast Food). This contaminated meat is then used to target the youth of America. The opportunity to eat healthy at school is very poor due to the demand for junk food and high calorie sodas. Sifferlin informs that “changes in school-lunch menus are also contributing to lower obesity rates” and need to be made in daily household meals as well (The Good and Bad).
