When thinking of an assignment for a writing class that engages with the principles of the contact zone, which Pratt defines it as, the gap in which transculturation takes place- where two different cultures meet and inform each other, in uneven ways. A contact zone allows for interaction between cultures, so cultural boundaries can be broken (Pratt 483). I was not just thinking of Pratts version of the word, but the literal meaning as well. For the assignment I created, transculturation is the art of the contact zone that will be targeted. Transculturation is the introduction of foreign elements into an established culture. The ultimate goal of this assignment is to get a better understanding on what transculturation means, develop communication skills with people of different opinions, and motivate them to succeed and be in the dominate group. To start off the assignment, the students would need to split the classroom into two groups. These group sizes will vary depending on the size of the classroom, but group sizes do not matter. The more students in a group the more input there will be, vice versa, less input with fewer number of students. Once the students are split into two groups they are ready to start the assignment. The assignment is to create what you think would be a perfect culture. There would then be a guideline worksheet handed out to each group listing the seven elements that make up a culture. These elements include social organizations; such as what would be the social class based on, and what smaller organizations might look like in your culture? Customs and traditions; what are the rules, written and unwritten, and what is the behavior like? Language; what language is spoken in your culture? Is there more than one? Arts and literature; what does your culture value, what promotes cultural pride and unity in your culture? Religion; is your culture monotheistic or polytheistic and why? Forms of government; is your culture a democratic, republican, or a dictatorship? Economic systems; is your culture technology friendly? Is your culture green, does your culture believe in recycling? What new ideas does your culture have? There will also be a section on cultural bias, such as racism but not only against ethnic groups. Each group will be given thirty minutes to fill out the guideline. Once the guideline is filled out and discussed thoroughly, the two groups will switch papers. After the perfect culture worksheet is switched the group will review and discuss within their small groups about what things were the same and what things were different. Once the differences are established the groups need to discuss on whether or not they lik
