The two historically significant people of the Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal (later to adopt the last name ‘Atatürk’) Pa?a and ?smail Enver Pa?a’s path mostly coincided until the end of the First World War. Enver Pa?a was more fortunate as he climbed upper ranks than Mustafa Kemal; he was the commander of the Army during the Battle of Çanakkale, while Mustafa Kemal defended the Suvla Bay Frontier. The two fought side by side during the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, Balkan Wars, and the Tripoli wars. In most of these wars, Enver was the higher ranked officer whilst the favorite commander of the Battle of Gallipoli was Mustafa Kemal. After the battle of the Caucasus, Enver Pa?a's career took a downturn. The fame of his archrival and former chief of staff, Mustafa Kemal, on the other hand, rose steadily until he defeated the Allies at Gallipoli and blocked the Dardanelles in 1916. Enver's fame, however, in spite of the many resounding successes that followed Sar?kam??, was never restored. Some sources indicate that Enver had so envied Kemal that he had occasionally tried to assign him to posts he deemed idle or fatal. Enver being jealous of Kemal’s success, he once rushed to a printing house which had been printing the 'War Magazine', and ordered Mustafa Kemal's picture removed from the to-be-pressed Magazine, and be replaced by the German general Otto Liman von Sanders's picture. Because according to Enver’s viewpoint, Mustafa Kemal should not overshadow Enver who was suffering from the heavy burden of the Sar?kam?? defeat. According to orthodox historiography, there were clear cut distinctions between Mustafa Kemal and Enver Pa?a. Enver Pa?a was seen as a mere 'charlatan' and a military buffoon, whereas Mustafa Kemal was seen as "honest, wise and bold" (1991). Enver was outdated, whereas Kemal was modern.
