?In modern Western Societies, ‘God is dead.’ Is this correct? In modern western society, religion has changed dramatically. Throughout the last millennia, religion in the west has without a doubt been strongly connection to that of Christianity. Prominent influences on religion in the west have been those of Martin Luther and John Calvin. Their role in the faith have allowed Christianity to spread to the west, and is arguably a large part in why religion has been so significant in the United Kingdom. However in the last century, a massive change has occurred, where other religions such as Islam has become apparent, whilst highlighting a decline in those believing in Jesus Christ. This essay will be focusing on the statement “God is dead” especially in the western world. What is key in assessing whether or not “God is dead” in modern western society is the term secularization. It can be defined as “the activity of changing something (art or education or society or morality etc.) so it is no longer under the control or influence of religion.” The more the western world modernizes, it is clear that more problems are created for religion, meaning that the doctrines, or rituals adopted by different religions in the western world are questioned intensively. Although this is the case, it doesn’t however mean religion in the western world is dead. On one hand there is the view that God is dead. This was first presented by Friedrich Nietzsche in his 'The Gay Science' (1882) followed by 'Thus spoke Zarathustra' (1883-1885) in which he displays the idea of God being dead. Although Nietzsche exclaims the idea of “God is dead” he did not mean this literally, instead he wanted to express the view, especially in the case of Christianity, that religion is not what Jesus, or the bible intended it to be.
