Medical Marijuana -Legalizing for Health

In the United States, a majority of Americans assume that marijuana is bad and should remain illegal. However, these people do not consider the other type of marijuana: medical marijuana and that it can be beneficial to people with different conditions and disease’s such as Dravet syndrome, HIV, or cancer because it can diminish symptoms and side effects. There have been research and cases that demonstrate that medical marijuana, if administrated correctly and under strict guidance of a doctor, can actually improve and ameliorate a patient’s condition. There also have been debates for and against the legalization of medical marijuana around the United States because of certain political, economic and social factors that would either be beneficial or not beneficial to our economy. Marijuana should be legal only for medical purposes and under certain restrictions and guidelines so that children and adults with diseases and conditions such as Dravet syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or arthritis can live without the painful effects of their diseases and conditions but also give our economy a boost that is needed. One example of a condition that marijuana can help a patient is Dravet syndrome, a rare type of epilepsy that begins in infancy and causing seizures everyday via by either a fever or illness, or other unknown causes. An example of a case of a child having Dravet syndrome is Northeast Ohio native Jordan Lyles,. She started having seizures at six months old and continued to be undiagnosed for ten and a half years. Because of the medication that Jordan was on after being diagnosed, she developed the cognitive level of a first grader. “Her mother Paula Lyles said a lifetime of seizures and medication that sometimes did more harm than good have robbed her daughter of a normal life”(Lee Jordan).
