Reflection Essay: An Overview of Health

This assignment asks for a reflective account on my views of my own health and the factors encountered which led to these views. I shall begin with a definition of health which will provide a platform to then discuss what health means to me personally and how my lifestyle choices have impacted on my health maintenance. I will discuss how important health is to me, as I move through to my senior years and the challenges age imposes on health. I will also discuss how health can be perceived in a different way through culture and the social environment and the impact on those through inequalities. I will illustrate my analysis through the K213 module material. As defined by World Health Organization health is a "State of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", (WHO 1948). I believe health is the balance between your physical, mental and social well-being, in my opinion all three factors are essential for good health I am a sixty year old British women of white ethnicity In relation to health for myself, I consider it to mean being able to function sufficiently as a human being without significant pain, disease and psychological problems. It also means being able to interact within society in the various roles I am expected to play and to enjoy life. To endeavor to maintain a healthy lifestyle by making choices that may help to sustain a good quality of life. Health is a complicated issue and there are numerous factors to adverse health, many of which we have no control over, for example certain types of disease through genetic inheritance, or through environmental pollution i.e., ozone layer, factories or deforestation. (Bendelow and Pridmore 1998) (cited in The Open University, 2013, p.17).
