Every civilization, every nation, every race has their own culture. In my mind, culture is something that we as human beings use to identify ourselves. Our culture is part of our identity and it can have a very huge impact on our lives or it could have a very minimal influence on our actions and beliefs. I believe that there is one American culture. We as Americans are very diverse and accepting of newcomers and we all believe in freedom and individual, inalienable human rights. American culture is about living life freely and being able to pursue your dreams. I interviewed my Mom and my friends Brian and Ben about what culture means to them and about American culture. I was curious to see if the people I interviewed had the same point of view when it came to American culture. My Mom defined culture as what a persons background history and ancestry is and what country they come from because every country has their own customs. My Mom was born in Malaysia and spent her childhood there. Malaysia has a huge Muslim and Chinese population. She knew fall about the teachings of Confucius and how the Chinese celebrate their holidays such as the Moon Cake Festival or the Lantern Festival. She also observed how the Muslims fasted during the holy month of Ramadan. My mother believes that there are two American cultures. She lives in NYC where the people are more liberal and diverse but shes also been to Arizona where she has relatives. The people of Arizona are very close and have very similar views about politics and religion and guns. There are two distinct American cultures in her mind. Brian is Chinese. His parents are from China and he was born in China but raised in the United States. Brian defines culture as where you grow up in as opposed to my Mom who believes that your birth country is tied to your culture. Brian doesnt adhere to any Chinese customs. He doesnt know how to use chopsticks. He doesnt believe in the teachings of ancient
