Section 1: The Catcher in the Rye talks about a teen boy named Holden Caulfield who just can't seem to fit in with everybody else at old Pencey High School. While drugs and alcohol plague the high status school, Holden just can't find a rhythm in either educational success or social success. Pencey is described as a school where preppy kids who like to do drugs and party go. Sure there are those kids who thrive on knowledge and will surely find himself on a ride to an IV League with no problem. Holden got kicked out of Pencey due to lack of work ethic and he didn’t really care about school. At first I couldn’t find myself next to a person like Holden his energy is purely negative and pessimistic, all he talks about is how he hates people and the world. But after analyzing his character, I began to find agreements between my person and Holden. Holden is very intelligent but doesn’t contribute to the masses with the knowledge he possesses. He chooses to keep all his talent to himself. He is a teenage drinker and a heavy cigarette smoker who has some friends but in my opinion they abuse him and stain there life problems on him. I think that in the first section of my reading, Holden is a conceited demented self centered freak who thrives on creepy bars and doesn’t care about education and will probably end up mopping the floor in some bar or hotel for a living. Section 2: While Holden tries to keep quiet about his expulsion, he is also blowing all his money on drinks and prostitutes which he never indulges in any sexual act with but still offers the one time fee for their diverse services. In my opinion Holden is not sexually active but he says he is just to look cool. as do other sex craving teens say. I felt throughout the book many things were repeated which made the book somewhat unlikable and annoying. I don’t like Holden in my opinion; his character is inferior to every other character in the book, lacking the confidence
