Should animals be used for scientific research? One of the biggest questions facing society today is if it is wrong or right. Animals have been used in experiments ever since people like Aristotle were around. Aristotle was actually one of the first people to use animals in scientific experiments. This greatly expanded human knowledge in medicine and even science. If you look at the advancements in medicine and science today from animals, the list is astounding. Although many people believe animal research and testing is cruel and should be stopped, the advantages to it are too valuable to ignore. Animal research is a vital role in human society and needs to continue. To begin with, animal research and testing has allowed people to make major advancements in medicine. Specifically, animals are used in areas like biomedical research. Each and every medication used by a human, is first tested on animals to check to see if the medicine does its job. Equally important, animals have been used to develop anesthetics to ease human ailments and suffering. Animal testing has also assisted in developing vaccines against serious diseases and to help cure diseases. Diseases like rabies, polio, measles, rubella, and TB all have a vaccine out made possible by animal testing. Additionally, without animal testing, we wouldn’t have antibiotics for infections, and as previously we would not have important vaccines. If this fundamental research in medicine is stopped, you can bet that we probably will never find a cure for cancer, a treatment for Parkinson’s disease, a vaccine for AIDS, and a therapy for Alzheimer’s and maybe a cure for paralysis. In addition to how using animals for research has made great advancements in biomedical research, it has also played a great role in coming up with medical procedures. Medical procedures can involve anything from surgery to simple things like how doctors take your temperature. Just about every technique doctors’ use has come from animal research. Surgery on animals has assisted humans greatly by allowing us to develop very important surgery methods. For instance, surgery on animals has assisted in developing
