When you think about persuasion, what comes to mind? Some people might think of advertising messages that urge people to buy a particular product. You are correct, but it goes deeper. Persuasion is used for so many things in today’s world. It can be used to prompt consumers to be active on purchases, donations, and even voting. In the text book, it discussed “defensive listening”, which promotes “critical thinking” as humans. In class we discussed the definition of persuasion as encouraging change. By knowing the definition of persuasion, you can know add a theory behind any type of persuasion. There are many types of theories on persuasion. Classical Rhetorical, Narrative, Critical- Feminist, Critical- Marxist and Elaboration theory are just a few. Every theory has a very descriptive definition and relation to every piece of persuasion you may encounter daily. In my paper I will discuss an advertisement that is persuasive that I came across on the internet. Its Katy Perry advertising what seems to be a healthy snack titled Pop Chips. In the ad, she seems very happy and healthy. She’s wearing a decorative sports bra showing off her toned slim body holding the product. It looks like she is about to work out, or may have just finished. The ad reads “love without the handles.” This clearly indicates that this healthy snack will help keep the fat away around the mid-section of your body. In the picture next to that one, she’s holding the Pop Chips as if she is happy, but has a cocky demeanor. The ad reads “noting fake about them”, which can be assumed that Pop Chips are all natural, with no fat or preservatives added. It also has a humorous side to it as well. She is holding the product by her chest area. To me it’s stating that they are as real as your breast. Using this ad I will briefly discuss how the Classical Rhetorical Theory and the Critical – Feminist theory can be applied to type of persuasion. I will a
