Peter Singer, an Australian moral philosopher and Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, penned the essay What Should a Billionaire Give ? In this essay he presents various astute explanations as to why billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet should give to the less fortunate. Conversely, middle class Americans should not be exempt from giving their fair share in the global effort to end world poverty. If we as a society are truly committed to ending world poverty we must all shoulder a portion of the responsibility and give more freely. Whenever, society undertakes any strong standpoint there is bound to be marked advantages, as well as, disadvantages to both the giver and receiver. The main focus in this paper will be to explore the dual questions set forth in title of Mr. Singer's essay. What a billionaire should give and what should the rest of us give? I felt a kinship to the cab driver, when he stated that no one should ever view another's wealth as their own or to dictate how it is spent. I further believe that entitlement is a form of evil; I believe everyone should look into the mirror and to first judge the reflection you see. I have been taught that we should lead by example, and let our lives be a beacon of light for others, so I believe that what a person does with his or her earnings is a personal choice I don't think any of us should judge them. Ultimately, our giving spirit should originate from the kindness of our hearts and someday we will be rewarded in heaven for our good deeds and not merely for self-sufficient gain or other ulterior motives. The further I pondered his essay the more I understand that, Singer's main argument was not to judge anyone based upon their contributions to end world poverty, but to simply give hypothetical solutions based on research and statistics. Singer states that in his research he found that America's top 10 percent actually earn enough capital to virtually end world poverty. The question becomes why the rich should give? My theory is that billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet must give a certain portion of their wealth to overshadow the burden they feel on their consciences or
