It is naive to think that no citizen can be trusted to own and use a gun responsively. There should not be a ban on guns in the United States because; it is a person's Constitutional right to bear arms, it will not reduce crime, and guns are not the number one cause of death in the United States. It is better to have a gun and not need it, than to not have a gun and need one. "A man with a gun is a citizen. A man without a gun is a subject. (John R. Lott). If guns are taken away, citizens will be subjected to just as much danger, if not more. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens will not benefit our country, it will only weaken it. The second amendment of the United States Constitution declares that all citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. Our founding fathers set this amendment in place to allow citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. Thomas Jefferson once said, "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Thomas Jefferson meant that if the government takes away guns, it will subjugate the assaulted to greater danger. For without guns, situations will be much worse for those who are not motivated to commit such crimes. If our founding fathers did not believe that the right to bear arms was important, they would not have placed it as the second amendment. Myths like crime reduction are being used to generate fear and distrust of the responsible people who own firearms (debate.org). If guns are banned, it's possible that the number of gun crimes may go down. Over all, crimes involving any other type of violence will not decline. Violence will still occur in the United States without guns, just as it did before guns
