Political, economic and social forces were a major influence for imperialism in the early 19th century. The Europeans were modernized, and believed that it was up to them to spread their ideas, life style, and expand their over sea markets. The government made it their goal to overtake other races and regions as they took pride in themselves and is backed up by their people due to the forces of nationalism. Parker T. Moon believed that it was the rich economic powers who were involved in the production of goods such as cotton and iron were those who would be interested in imperialism. (Doc 1) Those who were wealthy looked to other colonies to take over for economic benefits. Successful bankers also made profits by lending backward countries who haven’t modernized yet money to build transportation ports. This was needed because the mass producers were encouraged to expand their business overseas. Due to the Industrial Revolution, American factories produced more goods than the people could use. (Doc 2) This over production led the belief that it is up to the US to spread their goods, thus booming the economy. Now, instead of only American consumers, trading posts are set up for other countries to trade with the US. This spread of products was a greater addition to the American economy. The surplus of American products led to pride, as well as the thinking that it was up to them to “help” the backward countries. As the economy factors were a huge component of imperialism, the government’s power surged by its economy led to another reason for imperialism: Pride and Nationalism. When a population is filled with pride, they proudly show their patriotism for their country. With the stable economy and positive prosperity, the government, backed up by its people, propose a thinking that it was up to them to spread their economic achievements, their modern life style, and everything that they do.
