Analysis of desertification in China In order to combating the severe increase in sandy land and a distinct trend of woodland transforming to grassland which would decrease the stability of ecosystem and its fragile properties would easily suffer from desertification. Different measures have been taken by Chinese government but in this report we will focus on four main measures that are most representative and imposed a foreseeable effect on fighting the desertification in China. a. Great Green Wall of  China b. Establishment of  checkerboards c. Extraction of buried  soils ‹ d. Silt laden irrigations ‹ a) Great Green Wall of China The Three North Shelter Forest Programme, popularly known in China as the Great Green Wall was established in 1978 which aims to plant 35 million hectare of trees between 1978 and 2050 along 700km in northern China to cope with the overspreading desert. China claimed that 20% of forestland in the country has been successfully covered by this largest man-made forest and its goals is to cover totally 42% of land into forest in China by 2050. It has an obvious short term effect in reducing the sand storm, approaching transformation of grassland to desert and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide so the short term result is quite phenomenal. And most importantly, a large man-made forest can actually rebuild a balanced ecosystem and inhabitants for wild animals. What's more, the forest can become the sources of food for animals and local people who normally need to buy their daily food from adjacent town due to the unproductive sandy land. b) Establishment of  checkerboards Checkerboards are building up rows of fence which is composed of rice straws or wheat between the sandy land and protected area. The purpose of that was to increase the roughness of soil surface and decrease the wind speed when the wind passes through the checkerboards.
