Poe had used first person narrative in his stories because he wanted to draw the reader into the story, to make his readers feel as if they were apart of the story. Some of the themes Poe is trying to convey are madness, and violence. The next paragraph is about the narrator in, “The Black Cat”, second is about the narrator in, “The Fall of he House of Usher” and lastly is about the point of view in the two stories, and how they are similar and different. In the first story The Black Cat the narrator seems to be like a reliable narrator, but we eventually see this is not the case. As soon as the narrator does this it becomes official that he is crazy, “I took from my waistcoat-pocket a penknife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket! I blush, I burn, I shudder, while I pen the damnable atrocity” (Poe 5). This proves that our narrator is becoming mad. This shows us that our narrator can get violent very quickly. The narrators’ cat is doing better now, “In the meantime the cat slowly recovered. The socket of the lost eye presented, it is true, a frightful appearance, but he no longer appeared to suffer any pain” (Poe 5). Symbolism is used here because the cat symbolizes a kind a hatred that people keep bottled up. Throughout the story his hatred toward the cat grows and he finally turns to drastic measures. The narrator is finally done with his cat, “One morning, in cold blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree;-hung it with the tears streaming from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse at my heart;-hung it because I knew that it had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason of offence;-hung” (Poe 6). In other words the narrator is officially insane because he just killed his cat. The narrator has gone mad without a doubt. Overall this proves the narrator is a violent man.
