The poem Vital is written by Omar Sabbagh. Omar Sabbagh was born in 1981 in London. His parents are of Lebanese origin. He was raised in London, and attended school there. He studied philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) in Oxford University as an undergraduate. In 2003, he began his masters in English Literature at KCL. He graduated from KCL ranking third from fifty-five students. In 2005, he began his PhD in English Literature, but he dropped a year later to become a poet. Omar then got his second masters degree in Creative Life Writing at Goldsmith’s. he is currently in the processes of getting his third masters degree in philosophy at Birback London, and is currently teaching in AUD. The poem Vital was published in his book “My Only Ever Oedipal Complaint”, which consists of 8 poems. In his poem Vital, he uses different sound elements, figures of speech, and construction of the poem. The author uses different sound elements in his poem, including alliteration and repetition. The poem has no end rhyme, but throughout the poem there are a few internal rhymes. In line seven, he rhymes beige with outrage, and in line fourteen and fifteen he rhymes tear with blare. The poem has alliteration, in which he repeats the letter of two close by words. Alliteration was used in line six, which the author wrote “green on grey”, and in line seventeen, where he wrote “”hair high” and light and loose”. Lastly, the poem has repetition of words and line. An example of repetition is found in line five, the author repeated the phrase “rising and falling” twice. This repetition might be for reassurance and to give a rhythmic feel to the poem. Another example of repetition is in line thirteen; the author repeats the phrase treat me well twice, and in line fourteen he repeats the word still twice.
