Howards End is an English novel written by E.M. Forster in Edwardian period, 1910. ˜E.M. Forster' (1879-1970) was considered as the greatest British novelist in the Edwardian's time. Howards End is a symbolic novel, which shows the connection of symbols in the novel to reality in life. Normally, the Edwardian period is up to the First World War in terms of literature and culture. In 1914, most of the British believed that Germany tried to challenge Britain, which is the world greatest nation. In contrast, German thought that Britain is too powerful country, full of corruption and the German will easily destroy the British. Consequently, in the novel Howards End, Forster is partly writing about his fear of war between Britain and Germany. The war occurred just 4 years after the novel was published. English society based on different groups of people from different social classes. The political power of England is in the upper class's hands, like the Wilcoxes whereas poor people like the Bast, cannot do anything about their hard life. The First World War is planned by the upper class but fought by middle class officers and the working class soldiers. The theme of Howards End come up with the question "Who shall inherit England? Does it belong to old gentry landowner class, business class, intellectual, middle class or the poor? The main point of novel can be summed up by its epigraph "Only connect ¦ which shows different connection all over the novel. There are many connections, which are connection between England and Germany, different social classes, men and women, tradition and modernity, city and countryside and inner and outer life. The first connection is the connection between England and Germany. Forster's purpose is to symbolize that Germany and England are close relative like cousins. Therefore, these two countries should not think of starting a war. He also reminds the readers to a close connection between British and German culture. He shows the English readers that Germany has a great culture to be respected as in the quote "The German is always on the lookout of beauty. - Chapter 9 Forster deliberately creates main characters the Schlegels, who half English half German as the upper middle class intellectual. The Schlegels live with the idea from their German father to have faith in human nature which is different from Aunt Juley who represents kind of old fashion English character. As the following quote; "You remember how he would trust strangers [ ¦] - Chapter 5 Margaret and Helen believe that it is better to be fooled than to suspicious others while Aunt Juley does not believe in that way. In the novel, there is the German sword and it is the symbolic of war between Germany and England. Meg and Helen's father hung it up which means no fighting. Forster wished that it should be no war between Germany and England. However, at the end of the novel, the German sword and the beating of Leonard symbolize the upcoming war between Britain and Germany.
