Teenage Pregnancy is a growing concern in the United States. It has unfortunately become glamorized in today's society with television shows like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom. These shows leave the impression on young women that if one becomes pregnant while a teen, they too can be featured on a television show. However, there is a lot more involved than what is shown in the television shows. In 2012, there were 305,388 births by females ages 15-19 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). The teen birthrate is higher in the United States than any other developed countries (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Teenagers and adults alike are ignorant to the causes, consequences, and preventative measures to take concerning teen pregnancy. There are many causes behind teen pregnancy that teens and parents are ignorant to. Often in school young girls are trying to make friends and find themselves so they are susceptible to peer pressure. Teenagers want to be accepted by peers, which causes them to participate in promiscuous behaviors. The second reason behind teen pregnancy is absence of parents. Parents relationship with their teen is very important to the teens behavior. Teens need guidance from their parents to keep them on the right track. The parents are usually the ones responsible of having the talk of puberty and sex. When the parents are too busy or not involved in the teens life, they seek information about sex from others and are misguided on the consequences (Langham, 2013). The parent being available for their teen is very important and most parents don't think about. The third main cause of teenage pregnancy is glamorization of pregnancy. Movies and news contribute to glamorizing pregnancy making it look desirable to teens which in turn teens think to be accepted is to be pregnant like everyone else (Langham, 2013). With television shows like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom giving teenage girls the false impression that if you get pregnant at a young age that you could get famous and have lots of media attention. It also gives the false impression that teenage pregnancy is not as hard as it really is and that one can always rely on parents to help raise their child.
